The Girl in Red | A Wedding Reflection at The Red Berry Estate

As the year moves on, I like to look back at the photos I’ve taken and think about what I want to add to my portfolio. When I revisit my favorite shots, I’m always reminded how photos can change and feel different after some time has passed. Garry Winogrand, the great photographer, used to wait months or even years before looking at his images. When he died in 1984, he still had hundreds of undeveloped rolls.

I love taking photos through frames, glass, and reflections. This month’s image was taken at The Red Berry Estate, a beautiful venue. There’s something mysterious and timeless about this photo. It almost looks like it could have been shot in the 1950s on Kodachrome. The woman in the red dress was about to leave the party, and she immediately caught my attention. Some of the dance floor lights reflected off the glass and lit up her face, making the moment even better.

On the technical side, I centered the 35mm frame to make her stand out, and I didn’t have much time to check what was around the corner. I aimed for a clear figure-to-ground relationship, with her gaze and the triangle shape of her dress adding balance and interest. The negative space on the right and the two vertical poles on the left help keep the composition balanced. I shot this with a Leica M11 and a 50mm lens, then edited it using Nik Collection Color Effex. See you next month!
