NYC in May: Street Photography in New York City
Images by Philip Thomas – June 2026
Had a fleeting chance to go to New York in May for a wedding, so these pics were captured with my friend, Christian Margain, as we took the opportunity to explore a little. In May, New York feels like a sequence of moments. Music floats out from a dim bar. Subway riders flash by behind the windows. At Grand Central, a worker stands under the American flag as people hurry past.
As you walk downtown, the city feels closer and more crowded. Fire escapes, one-way signs, and storefront letters all press together. In Chinatown, handwritten signs fill the window of a roast-duck shop. Two shoppers reach over a bin of apples. A delivery cart leans forward, loaded with boxes. Restaurant workers stop on the sidewalk and look up while others keep walking.
In the evening, the city’s rhythm shifts. People cross an elevated walkway, their shapes outlined against the gloaming sky. The city is still busy and restless, but for a moment, everything moves in a single line.
The photos capture the city from the street, where different stories meet for just a moment before fading away. Paramedics help someone by the road. A couple eats takeout on some steps. A woman walks through a bright spot of afternoon sun. Reflections on a van window blend the street alongside the quiet inside a cab.
After it rains, puddles reflect the people walking by, making the street feel twice as busy. A child waits on a scooter. A man steps from the shadow into sunlight. Under a subway bench, a small dog stares out while its owners are just out of view.
All captured with a Leica M11 +28mm Elmarit.
