WHAT’S IN MY BAG?

Here’s the camera gear I use for weddings and unit stills / BTS for film and television. If you’re just starting out as a wedding photographer, you should have at least two camera bodies, and it’s even better to have a third as a backup. You’ll also want a wide-angle zoom and a telephoto zoom, but try to avoid using the kit lens.

If your budget allows, invest in professional-quality lenses. In my experience, it’s usually better to spend your money on good lenses rather than the camera body. Old lenses are great too – I’m not into the clinical look that many modern lenses provide; in fact, some of the Sigma Art lenses are like that, and I no longer use them. Most old lenses have character and flaws. That’s a good thing. Just be sure they focus correctly.

Having the right gear is important. You never want to show up to a wedding with just one camera, because accidents can happen. Still, try not to focus too much on equipment. The best thing you can do is spend time learning and practicing your craft.
