Dirty Pithi Ceremony | Movement and Celebration at The Rice

This image is from four beautiful days spent with Imran and Mehr in Houston. This image is my photo of the month. A pithi ceremony is a joyous, lively, and lighthearted occasion in which family members and friends bless the couple with good wishes. In modern times, the “dirty pithi” is a fun spin in which the groom’s family and friends throw food items, such as eggs, milk, flour, and condiments, to send him off into married life.

I chose this image, captured at the Crystal Ballroom at The Rice in Houston, because I wanted to capture the feel of the moment by dragging the shutter on my Leica. The dirty pithi starts with the bride, Mehr, cracking an egg over the groom’s head (Imran is in there somewhere), and then family members begin the fun. I don’t use flash in my work, so this was a creative way to capture the energy and fun of the occasion. See more of my favorite images from 2022 here.
